Meet Anne

A legacy of strength and resilience that lives on in Anne’s House

Anne’s journey is one of determination and quiet strength.

From an early age, Anne excelled in her studies. Though her heart was set on teaching, she honoured her mother’s wishes by enrolling in nursing school. Upon graduating from St. Mary’s School of Nursing, she suffered a nervous breakdown. At that time, mental illness was deeply stigmatized and many families hid it. Anne’s family was no different, but she persevered and dedicated herself to the care of others.

As life unfolded, Anne continued to face new trials. After several years in nursing, she married and had two sons in quick succession. With an absent husband, Anne felt the weight of raising her children alone, and a second breakdown followed, forcing her to step away from her profession. This time Anne sought professional help and pursued her passion in teaching at Châteauguay Regional High School. The pressure of single motherhood and the long commutes took a toll, yet she pushed forward.

Determined to build a stable future for her family, Anne made the bold transition into the pulp and paper industry, where she accepted a position as head of medical services. She provided her ability to navigate complex environments by rising to an executive position.

Even with all she achieved, she was confronted with another battle: lung cancer. True to her nature, Anne fought with everything she had, until she passed on March 11th, 2011.

Her brother, Robin Burns was on the Board of Directors of The Hadley Community. He suggested that the organization have a women’s residence, and the Board voted that it would be named Anne’s House.

Anne’s legacy extends far beyond her career as a nurse and teacher. She was a mother, a grandmother, and a fighter. She carried the weight of her struggles but never let them define her.

This International Women’s Day, honor Anne’s legacy by supporting the women of Anne’s House. Here, women find not just housing, but a community of strength and support.
